Course Description
This 10-hour course is an introduction to the Slingerland screening procedures for students. These procedures help identify students with specific language disabilities. The tests aid in identifying children whose current language difficulties may continue beyond periods of development or maturational lag and become persistent specific language disabilities in later grades.
Teacher/participants will actively apply the Slingerland® multisensory techniques in practice sessions.

How to use the Slingerland screening procedures for referral or remediation
How paraprofessionals can assist in the screening and scoring process
How these screenings can reveal important information about a student's learning pattern
How to identify strengths and weaknesses in language learning for every child in your classroom
How these strengths and weaknesses impact reading, handwriting, spelling, and written and oral expression
How to compare auditory, visual and kinesthetic-motor performance

Building Better Reading Strategies -

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Slingerland Reading Skills short course that includes an opportunity for guided practice WITH Students! The relationship of learning reading skills to the acquisition of oral language and its development will be explored. Multisensory techniques that begin with single units of sight, sound and feel and progress to larger units will be taught and practiced. These techniques include decoding skills, phrase-reading, vocabulary development, fluency skills, reading with comprehension, and higher-level critical thinking skills leading to increased fluency and comprehension.
COURSE CONTENT
Instruction in teaching techniques and background knowledge of the
SlingerlandĀ® Adaptation for Classroom use of the Orton-Gillingham
Approach;
Current research findings;
Relationship of learning reading skills and oral language and its development;
Organization of the English language;
Development of an integrated lesson plan based on your current curriculum
materials;
Systematic structure for decoding and vocabulary development;
Instructional strategies that will increase comprehension and fluency
skills
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS/CLOCK HOURS
Approved for 1.5 continuing education units through the University of San Diego. Clock hours are also available to Washington state participants. The course has been approved for 24 clock hours through 247Ed. Enrollment information is provided at the beginning of the course.

Pre-READING SKILLS SHORT COURSE - August 22-23, 2012 -- $375
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This 10-hour course provides instruction based on the work of Beth H. Slingerland for professionals working with preschool through first grade students. The content of the course includes some precursors to formal reading: oral language development, phonemic awareness, and the sight, sound and form of each letter of the alphabet. These beginning multisensory skills can prevent failure and give children the foundation needed for future success in formal reading, writing and spelling.
COURSE CONTENT
The understanding of what children need to know before they learn to read;
The normal development of oral language;
Oral language skills - listening and speaking;
Phonological awareness activities in the classroom
The sight, sound, form and key-word of each letter of the alphabet
The major components of reading acquisition
Current assessment strategies for beginning readers
Indicators of reading problems and characteristics of language/learning disability
CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS

In this 10-hour course, you will learn the Slingerland instructional techniques for teaching manuscript and cursive handwriting using the Slingerland® Approach.
COURSE CONTENT
Learn the purpose of handwriting instruction;
Recognize the development stages of handwriting in students/
children;
Identify breakdowns in the learning process and development
prescriptive lesson plans that can be used either in classroom,
tutoring or homeschool environment;
Learn strategies for teaching students to copy accurately from far
point and near point;
Get the beginning steps for putting handwriting to functional use.
